ABOUT THE ARTIST
Vincent Hyland is one of Ireland's best known natural history personalities, scientist and multi award winning filmmaker, writer, artist and musician. He has appeared on radio and TV including BBC, RTE, TV3, ITV and TG4. Whether he's talking about his Antarctic adventures or diving with and filming Whale shark or Hammerhead sharks in Galapagos, or raising awareness about Kenmare Bay's marine wildlife, Vincent's lifelong aim is to help conserve what is left of Co. Kerry's incredible marine and freshwater heritage.
Growing up in Dublin, I started drawing and painting wildlife as a child. Seeing Jacques Cousteau on TV, snorkelling and diving while on holidays in Derrynane and Kenmare all contributed towards a lifelong passion for everything aquatic. I illustrated the first guide to Ireland's marine fish and shellfish. I illustrated fish cookbooks, nautical charts and created images for marine guides. I took the first all Irish group to Antarctica, I was the first to film whale sharks in Galapagos. I published Ireland's first multi award winning wildlife magazine "Wild Ireland". I filmed, wrote and web broadcast the prix d'Europa award winning Jacky and Daw - the very first of RTE's 'Mooney goes wild' Nestwatch programmes.
CONSERVATION EDUCATIONI am passionate about Derrynane and Kenmare Bay, giving talks, going on walks, snorkelling, diving and taking people on whale and dolphin watching expeditions. I believe that the key for tourism and sustainable income in the region is in the protection of the environment and in the education of children - the region's future stakeholders and future tourists. Using a combination of outdoor education, art, film and interactive digital media I reach out to my audience. Kenmare Bay is one of Ireland's most biodiverse areas and is home to rare plants, animals, habitats and marine communities. My film "The Bay" highlighting the underwater natural history of Kenmare Bay, was the first high definition film about marine life, to be made in Ireland. Together and with your help, I can continue to raise awareness and so help protect this last great wilderness at the edge of Europe.
The underwater world of Kenmare Bay is the jewel in Europe's biodiverse marine ecosystem. Here we see whales, dolphins, sharks, exotic sunfish, giant leatherback turtles, tuna and literally thousands of other marine creatures. Our position at the edge of Europe, facing into the wild Atlantic brings us many rewards. Clean seas, rugged scenery, underwater canyons and kelp forests all combining to influence my art. This seemingly silent world is not so silent! Seabirds call, dolphins and whales sing, winds howl, waves crash and gannets dive. As visitors we rarely encounter this world. This is my world. Through my paintings and illustrations through colour, expression and vibrancy, through film and sound I hope to immerse you in this incredible 'other' world.
